for the maintenance of the normal functioning of the immune system,
for the maintenance of normal homocysteine metabolism.

Low maternal folate levels are a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the developing foetus. A beneficial effect occurs with a daily supplementary intake of 400 μg of folic acid for at least one month before conception and up to three months after conception.
